bologna sandwich is a common sandwich in the United States and Canada. Also known as barbecue , it is traditionally made from pre-sliced ââbento sausages between slices of white bread, along with various herbs, such as mayonnaise, mustard, and tomato sauce. Many variations exist, including frying the meat first and adding various ornaments such as slices of cheese, pickles, tomatoes, and onions. This is a popular choice; Oscar Mayer reports 2.19 billion sandwiches made under the bologna brand per year.
Bologna sandwiches tend to be high in saturated fats (more if cheese is added), and high in sodium.
Bologna sandwiches, fried or not melted, have been raised to regional specialties in the Midwest, Appalachia, and South. This is a sandwich served at the lunch counter from a small family-run market that surrounds the Great Smoky Mountains, and fried bologna sandwiches can be found in restaurant menus in many places in the South. Fried version is also sometimes sold in concessions at the stadium, as in Reds Cincinnati. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this is called "jumbo sammich". In East Tennessee, sandwiches are referred to in local slang as "Lonsdale Ham" sandwiches, after a less affluent neighborhood in Lonsdale, in Knoxville, TN. In Kentucky, it is sometimes referred to as "Kentucky Round Steak."
In southwest Virginia, nonsense is also referred to as "Hoover Ham". In the coal mining area of ââSouthwest Virginia and Southeastern Kentucky, fried bologna is also known as "Miner's steak."
