Breakfast sandwiches are usually made with breakfast meats (generally preserved meats such as sausage, sausage patty, bacon, country ham, Spam and pork roll), bread, eggs and cheese. This sandwich is usually a regional specialty until fast food restaurants start serving breakfast. Since common types of bread, like English biscuits, bagels, and muffins, have the same size as fast-food hamburger buns, they make a clear choice for fast-food restaurants. Unlike other breakfast items, they are perfect for drive-through innovation. This sandwich is also a staple of many department stores.

History
Although the ingredients for breakfast sandwiches have been a common element of breakfast food in the English-speaking world for centuries, it was not until the 19th century in the United States that people started eating eggs, cheeses, and meats regularly in sandwiches. What became known as a "breakfast sandwich" became more popular after the Civil War, and was a favorite food of the pioneers during the western expansion of America. The first recipe that was published for "breakfast sandwich" was an American cookbook in 1897.
