Platform General Motors G (also called G-body ) is the design of the car platform used for medium-sized rear wheel drive cars. It made its first appearance from 1969 to 1972, adapted from GM's A-body, and resurfaced from 1982 to 1988. The second series of G-body started production set as an A-body car in 1978, but was redesigned as G-body when the A-body front wheel drive platform was introduced in 1982.

Use

The G-body designation was originally used for the 1969-1972 Pontiac Grand Prix and the 1970-1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo private luxury car.

Between 1973 and 1981, the A-body coupe with a formal roof line was designated as A-Special and after 1982 was dubbed as G-Special . This special coupe includes Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and Buick Regal two-door model; The 1978 model is the year of a change between the larger 1973-77 bodystyle and the reborn A/G platform.

For the 1982 model year, Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac LeMans coupes were dropped along with Buick and Oldsmobile fastbacks. 1983 is the last year for Malibu cars and sedans, leaving the G-Special coupon, Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac formal roof sedan and Chevrolet El Camino/GMC Caballero. For 1988, most of the remaining G-body models were moved to the new GM W front-wheel drive platform. Pontiac Bonneville had been transferred to H-body for 1987, El Camino was dropped without a replacement and there will be a year's distance before the Chevrolet Lumina W-body coupin replaces Monte Carlo. GM then uses the G-body designation for an unrelated full-sized car.

The G-body is the last few cars that follow the classic front engine, the large V8 and the rear-wheel drive car formula, remain popular while most medium-sized cars move to the front-wheel drive equipped with a simple V8 or V6 engine. They were also among the last racing production vehicles at NASCAR (and quite competitive at the time, with Buick Regal specifically dominating many races of its time). The NASCAR regulations continue to establish parts of the body of production until 2003 (ie, hoods, roofs, and deck coverings), but because most of the vehicles coming from the body during this period have a transverse front-wheel drive layout (many even less V8 as option), drivetrain and all the fixtures that run either built specifically or sourced from other models (usually, older).
