Geography
The canyon separates the westernmost Conejo Grade and Bukit Simi from Mount Clef Ridge to the east. It was formed by Arroyo Conejo (tributary) flowing through Simis from the higher Conejo Valley to the lower Santa Rosa Valley, where the creek joined Arroyo Santa Rosa and became Conejo Creek.
Located in an area known as La Barranca (Spanish for canyons).
This is a deeply eroded gorge at the foot of dramatic hills and volcanoes at Mount Clef Ridge. Hill Canyon is part of Conejo Canyons Open Space, owned and operated by Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF).
The valley is located east of Conejo Grade in Camarillo, CA, and directly to the west of Mount Clef Ridge of Wildwood Regional Park in Thousand Oaks. Hiking trails and bridges connect these cities from trailheads found for example in Wildwood Regional Park, Rancho Conejo Playfields, and Santa Rosa County Park. Hill Canyon Trail is the main route and connects to the Hawk Canyon Trail, the Western Plateau Trail, the Arroyo Conejo Trail, the Lynnmere Trail and the Canyon Overlook Trail, which climb to the top of Mount Clef Ridge from Santa Rosa Valley.
The only area developed at Hill Canyon is the Hill Canyon Wastewater Treatment Plant (HCTP), which takes about sixty acres and includes the largest water body in Newbury Park. It has a capacity of 14,000,000 gallons per day, and about 3.7 billion gallons of water are dispensed here every year for processing. Thousands of gallons in the dirt spill have caused a leak into adjacent Conejo Creek, which is dumped at the mouth of the Mugu Lagoon.
The Conejo Gorges make a total of 1,628 hectares when combined together. Flora includes live oak beach and riparian forest, sage beach tracker, as well as interior and chaparral sage scrubs. From the nearby peaks there is a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, the Oxnard Plain, and the Topatopa Mountains. The tracks here are used for horseback riding, mountain biking, running, and hiking.
