History

In the nineteenth century, Juhu was an island: a long, narrow sand bar towering above sea level by one or two meters, not far from the west coast of Salsette. That can be achieved during low tide by walking across the tidal inlet.

Juhu is called "Juvem" by the Portuguese. At the northern point, located Juhu village, inhabited by Bhandaris (toddy tappers), Agris (salt merchant) and Kulbis (tiller) and on the south point, opposite Bandra island, lived a small colony of fishermen and farmers (Koliwada). The people of Juhu are mostly Koli and there is a small part of Goans. St. John's Church Joseph was built by the Portuguese in 1853.

Juhu's open beach has attracted the wealthiest and most prosperous people among the people of Mumbai for nearly a century. In the 1890s, Tata Jamsetji bought land in Juhu and built a bungalow there. He plans to develop 1,200 hectares (5 km²) at Juhu Tara. This is to produce 500 plots of one acre (4,000 m²) each and a seaside resort. At the same time he wanted to extend Jalan Mahim to Santacruz, to access this area. After his death in 1904, the scheme was abandoned. With the dawn of aviation in the 20th century, the Bombay Flying Club began operating in 1929 in what ended up being Juhu Aerodrome today.

During the struggle for independence, Mahatma Gandhi visited Mumbai and took a stroll at Juhu Beach. There is a famous photograph of Gandhiji who poked his grandson Kanaa while strolling in Juhu Beach, Bombay, 1937. To mark Gandhi's visit at Juhu, there is a famous Gandhi statue by the beach and a path to the beach called Gandhigram Road. There is also a Gandhi Shiksha Bhavan school in Juhu.

In the 1970s, Bhaktivedanta Swami (Srila Prabhupada) initiated the Hare Krishna Movement and built the ISKCON Temple, giving Juhu its global recognition. He also gave various philosophical and spiritual discourses and wrote many books here. His lecture on Bhagavat Samkhya (S.B 3.26) given at ISKCON Juhu has been an important source for research especially in the field of Quantum Mechanics. [1] [2]
