Originally due to open in 2009, Las Vegas Sands faces delays caused by increased material costs and labor shortages from the start. The global financial crisis also pressured the company to delay its projects elsewhere to complete the integrated resort.

Marina Bay Sands is one of two winning proposals for the first integrated resort in Singapore; the other is Resorts World Sentosa, which combines Universal Studios Theme Park (Universal Studios Singapore). The two large-scale resorts are designed to meet Singapore's economic and tourism goals over the next decade and will have a 30-year, exclusive casino license for the first ten years. Bidders are judged on four criteria: the attractiveness and contribution of tourism, architectural concepts and design, development investment, and the strength of the consortium and partners

On May 27, 2006, Las Vegas Sands (LVS) was declared the winner with a business-oriented resort. LVS makes its own winning bid. The original partner of City Developments Limited (CDL), with 15% of the proposed equity stake, was withdrawn from the partnership in the second phase of the tender process. CDL CEO Kwek Leng Beng said his company's withdrawal was a combination of factors - such as the difficulty of getting many companies to comply with time, and the reluctance of some to disclose certain personal information in the honesty check required by Singapore. government. However, Kwek is retained as an advisor to the Sands offer.

Investment

Las Vegas Sands initially committed to invest S $ 3.85 billion in the project, excluding the S $ 1.2 billion fixed cost of 6,000,000 square feet (560,000 m 2 ) the site itself. With rising material costs, such as sand and steel, and labor shortages due to infrastructure and other large property developments in the country, Sheldon Adelson put the total development cost at S $ 8.0 billion in July 2009.

Las Vegas Sands stated that the venture is "one of the most challenging construction projects in the world and of course the most expensive, self-contained integrated resort property ever built". It expects the casino to generate at least $ 1 billion in annual profits. Two months after the initial staged opening, the casino attracts about 25,000 visitors a day, about a third are Singaporeans and permanent residents who pay a daily $ 100 levy or $ 2,000 for unlimited access yearly. Half a million gamblers passed the casino in June 2010. In the third quarter of 2012, Marina Bay Sands revenues fell by almost 28 percent from a year earlier.

For the economy, Marina Bay Sands is projected to stimulate an additional $ 2.7 billion or 0.8% to Singapore's Gross Domestic Product by 2015, employ 10,000 people directly and 20,000 jobs created in other industries.

Design and construction

The resort was designed by Moshe Safdie, who said was originally inspired by the deck of cards. The architect is Aedas, and they are responsible for hiring all consultants and for developing, co-ordinating and implementing the design. Techniques provided by Arup and Parsons Brinkerhoff (MEP). The main contractor is Ssangyong Engineering and Construction. In addition to the casino, other important components of this plan are three hotel towers with 2,500 rooms and suites, ArtScience Museum covering 19,000 m (supersi) (200,000 sq ft) and convention center with 110,000 m 2 (1,200,000 sqÃ, ft) space, able to accommodate up to 45,000 people. The continuous lobby at the base connected the three towers. The resort's architecture and major design changes along the way were also approved by its feng shui consultants, the late Chong Swan Lek and Louisa Ong-Lee.

The hallmark of this hotel is the SkyPark, a three-hectare park over the top with a swimming pool, garden and jogging track. The structure bridges the three towers with cantilever segments from the north tower. The SkyPark hull is made offsite in 14 separate steel parts and then assembled on top of the tower. There are four joint motions under the main pool, designed to help them resist the natural movement of the tower, and each joint has a unique range of motion. Total range of motion is 500 millimeters (20 inches). In addition to the wind, the hotel tower is also subject to settlement on earth from time to time, so engineers build and install special jack feet to allow future adjustments at over 500 points under the pool system. This jacking system is especially important to ensure the infinity edge of the pool continues to function properly.

The three towers are wider at the base and narrow as they rise. Each tower has two asymmetrical legs, with arched eastern legs leaning against the other, creating significant technical challenges in its construction. A substantial temporary structure is required to support tower feet while they are under construction, and requires real time monitoring for ongoing assessment and analysis during their erection. The structural engineering for this project is handled by Arup, with Parsons Brinckerhoff MEP engineers. The building was built by South Korean construction company "SsangYong".

Opening

Marina Bay Sands was originally planned to be completed in one phase in 2009, but increased construction costs and the financial crisis forced the company to open it gradually. The opening of the first phase preview was postponed further until April 27, 2010, and the official opening was pushed back to June 23, 2010. The remainder of the complex remained under construction and opened after opening on 17 February 2011.

IPBA withheld payments of S $ 300,000 and consequently prosecuted by Marina Bay Sands. In June, the IPBA opposed plaintiffs, describing the place as a "complete disaster" and that previous payments had been imposed by "coercion, fear and strength". A "peaceful settlement" with an undisclosed term was announced in August.

On June 23, 2010, the resort has an official opening with a "2 day celebration"; these include Sands SkyPark, Event Plaza along Marina Bay, more shops, additional dining options and nightlife, and the rest of the hotel rooms. First day events included - "World Climbing Championships" on the glass facade of the building to SkyPark, with seven teams from 21 top climber from around the world competing, and an evening concert for 4,000 invited guests and customers featuring Jacintha Abisheganaden, Sylvia Ratonel, Tabitha Nauser, and Toni Braxton. SkyPark opened on the second day at 2 pm, with about 2,000 S $ 20 adult tickets sold.

Two Sands Theaters finished on time for the first show by Riverdance on November 30, 2010. The ArtScience Museum opened its doors to the public at 10 am on February 19, 2011. The highly anticipated musical The Lion King debuted at March 3, 2011. The floating pavilion was opened when tenants of Louis Vuitton and Pangea Club completed their renovations and opened on September 18, 2011 and September 22, 2011, respectively.
