Sandbagging , hiding the strength, skill, or difficulty of something or someone early in the engagement, may refer to:

  • Sandbag on billiards and other games, deliberately played below one's actual ability to fool an opponent in order to receive a higher bet bet, or to lower one's competitive rank in order to play in the future with a higher disability and therefore have a better chance of winning; this term has spread to chess, Go (also known as Weiqi or Baduk), golf, and other games. Also known as rushing.
    • Sandbagging (grappling), competing in a skill group or being ranked lower than deemed capable
    • Sandbagging (racing), deliberately getting qualified slower than what a car can actually do
    • Slow play (poker), playing cheats on poker
    • Sandbagging (climbing rock), recommending a route to a fellow climbers who are known to be very challenging in the hope that climbers will find it harder than expected
  • Sandbagging (the law), sues for representational offenses or contractual warranties even though it has been noticed at the time of the contract that it is incorrect.
  • Sandbagging (sale), when someone holds the sale in order to help qualify for promotion next month.
  • Sandbags (social), when someone holds comments or information that can support the cause or argument of another person or another, especially after the previous understanding, or implicit understanding, that support will be provided.
  • Sandbagging (the media), getting interviews or recording rights from someone expecting a positive piece, then cutting or contextualizing it into a negative story.
  • Sandbagging (professional wrestling), in which the wrestler is lifted deliberately shifts his weight to feel heavier, making other wrestlers seem weak or clumsy.
