Versatility means the panels have many applications and come in various forms: the core and the leather material can vary widely and the core may be a honeycomb or a solid stuffing. In buildings and construction, these prefabricated products are designed to be used as building envelopes. They appear in industrial buildings and offices, in clean and cold rooms and also in private homes, either renovation or new construction. They combine high quality products with high flexibility related design. They generally have good energy efficiency and sustainability.

In packaging, applications include fluted polypropylene boards and polypropylene honeycomb boards.

Structural insulation panel , or structural insulation panel , ( SIP ), is a panel used as a building material.

ACP

Aluminum composite panels ( ACP ), made of aluminum composite material ( ACM ), is a flat panel consisting of two sheets of thin-coated aluminum sheets bonded to a non-aluminum core. ACP is often used for external cladding or building facades, insulation, and nameplate.

ACP is mainly used for cladding or external and internal architectural partitions, false ceiling, signage, engine cover, container construction, etc. ACP applications are not limited to external building cladding, but can also be used in various cladding forms such as partitions, false ceilings, etc. ACP is also widely used in the marking board industry as an alternative to heavier and more expensive substrates.

ACP has been used as a lightweight yet very sturdy material in construction, especially for temporary structures such as trade show stands and similar temporary elements. Recently it has also been adopted as a support material for the installation of fine art photography, often with acrylic finish using processes such as Diasec or other face fitting techniques. The ACP material has been used in well known structures as Spaceship Earth, VanDusen Botanical Garden, Leipzig branch of the German National Library.

This structure utilizes the optimal use of ACP through cost, durability, and efficiency. Flexibility, low weight, and easy formation and processing enable innovative design with increased stiffness and durability. Where the core material is flammable, use should be considered. The standard ACP core is polyethylene (PE) or polyurethane (PU). These materials do not have good refractory properties (FR) unless they are specifically treated and therefore generally unsuitable for building materials for residence; some jurisdictions have banned its use completely. Arconic, the owner of the Reynobond brand, warns potential buyers. Regarding the core, it is said that the distance of the panel from the ground is the determinant of "which materials are safer to use". In a brochure, he has a picture of a burning building, with the caption "as soon as the building is taller than a fire staircase, it must be contained with a material that is not fire-proof". Cladding materials, especially cores, have been involved as contributing factors in the 2017 Tower of Grenfell fire in London, as well as high-rise building fires in Melbourne, Australia; France; United Arab Emirates; South Korea; and the United States. Fire-graded cores, such as mineral wool (MW), are an alternative, but are usually more expensive and often not a legal requirement.

The aluminum sheet can be coated with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), fluoropolymer resin (FEVE), or polyester paint. Aluminum can be painted in a variety of colors, and ACP is produced in a variety of metallic and non-metallic colors as well as patterns that mimic other materials, such as wood or marble. The general core is low-density polyethylene (PE), or a mixture of low-density polyethylene and mineral materials to exhibit fireproof properties.

Composite 3A (formerly Alcan Composites & Alusuisse) invented aluminum composites in 1964 - as a joint discovery with BASF- and Alucobond commercial production began in 1969. This product was patented in 1971, a patent that ended in 1991. After the expiration of the patent some companies started commercial production such as Reynobond (1991), Alpolic (Mitsubishi Chemicals, 1995), etalbond (1995). Today, it is estimated that more than 200 companies worldwide produce ACP.

History

The sandwich panel construction technique has grown considerably in the last 40 years. Previously, sandwich panels were considered only suitable products for functional construction and industrial buildings. However, good insulation characteristics, their versatility, quality and attractive visual appearance, have resulted in wider and widespread use of panels in various buildings.
