History

In 1965, Fred DeLuca borrowed $ 1,000 from Peter Buck's friends to start "Pete Super Submarines" in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and the following year, they formed Doctor's Associates Inc. to oversee the operation of the restaurants when the franchise is expanded. The parent company gets its name from DeLuca's goal to get enough of the business to pay tuition for medical school, as well as Buck has a doctorate in physics. Associates Doctors are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any medical organization. In 1968, the sandwich shop was named "Subway".

The first subway on the West Coast opened in Fresno, California, in 1978. The first subway outside of North America opened in Bahrain in December 1984. The first subway in England opened in Brighton in 1996. In 2004, Subway began. opened a store in Walmart supercenters and surpassed the number of McDonald's locations inside the US Walmart store in 2007.

Since 2007, Subway has been consistently listed in the Top 500 Franchises magazine Entrepreneur . It ranks # 2 in 2012. It also ranks # 2 on the "Fastest Growing Franchise" and "Global Franchise" list. By the end of 2010, Subway became the largest fast food chain in the world, with 33,749 restaurants - 1,012 more than McDonald's.

In January 2015, Suzanne Greco took over the course of the Subway from his brother Fred DeLuca, who had been the CEO, but suffered from leukemia for two years (he died in September 2015), and became president and CEO.

In 2016, Subway closed hundreds of US restaurants, suffered a net loss on site for the first time. However, with 26,744 locations, it remains the most common restaurant chain in the US (with McDonald's in place # 2). Also in 2016, Subway announces a new logo for the franchise, which will be implemented by 2017. On July 17, 2017, Subway launched a redesigned restaurant, dubbed "Fresh Forward." Features include self-order kiosks; USB charging port on the table; and a new menu, including additional spices, and bread made without gluten. The company is piloting changes across 12 locations across the United States, Canada and the UK, with many features expected to be implemented to stores worldwide by the end of 2017.

By 2017, the network closes more than 800 locations in the US. In April 2018, the chain announced it would close about 500 more that year. According to Abha Bhattarai from The Washington Post, this is the result of three consecutive years of declining profits, and pedestrian traffic in subway stores has decreased 25 percent since 2012. Franchisees also complained that promotion within the company further takes away at a profit. Industry analysts such as Bob Phibbs, chief executive of the consulting firm Retail Doctor, based in New York, say consumer-made tastes, which more often choose locally sourced and meat-free products served by new companies such as Sweetgreen, Metropolitan, is the cause of the decline in Subway sales, as well as the loss of market share to competitors. These include fast-casual restaurants and sandwich shops like Panera Bread, Au Bon Pain and Firehouse Subs, as well as food trucks, and grocery stores offering freshly made food at competitive prices. In January 2018, Subway invested $ 25 million in a re-branding campaign targeted at young consumers to revitalize its image and boost sales.

Products

The subway core product is underwater sandwich (or "sub"). In addition to this, the chain also sells lulur, salads, panini, and baked goods (including cookies, donuts, and muffins).

The best-selling sandwich on Subway, B.M.T., contains pepperoni, salami, and ham. The name originally stood for Brooklyn Manhattan Transit, but now stands for "Bigger, Meatier, Tastier".

Subway also sells breakfast sandwiches, English muffins, and flatbread. In 2006, "private pizza" debuted in several US markets. It's made to order (like a submarine) and heated for 85 seconds. Breakfast and pizza are only available in some stores. In November 2009, Subway signed an agreement to exclusively serve Best Coffee Seattle coffee as part of its breakfast menu in the US.

On April 18, 2017, Subway announced the addition of paninis to its menu. Chipotle Steak & amp; Cheese, Triple Cheese, Chicken Cordon Bleu, and Italian B.M.T. Melt is the four variations announced.

Area variation

The Subway menu varies across countries, most significantly where there are religious requirements relating to the meat being served.

In 2006, the first Halal Subway restaurant in the United States opened, in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio on the JCC Mandel of Cleveland. Former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle attended the opening. The press release stated, "With a few modifications, like no pork-based products, and the use of soy-based cheese products, this menu is almost identical to other Subway restaurants." Another opening soon followed, briefly making Subway one of the largest halal restaurant chain in the US. At its peak, twelve Kosher subway locations opened in the US, including Kansas City and 5 in New York. In 2011, only five remained, in Cleveland, Miami, Los Angeles, and two stores in Maryland. Franchisees who fail to note the lack of support from the parent site in advertising, higher costs of halal food and surveillance, inability to stay open on Saturdays, and that customers who do not keep halal prefer genuine menu and prices.

Subway opened its first restaurant in India in 2001 in New Delhi. Subway restaurants in India do not serve beef and pork products with respect to their respective Hindu and Muslim beliefs and sell an expanded vegetarian range due to the large number of vegetarians in the country. There are 591 Subway restaurants in 68 cities in India in January 2017. On September 4, 2012, Subway opened the first vegetarian outlet on the campus of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar, Punjab. On March 6, 2013, Subway opened a second vegetarian outlet that also offered Jain food at Paldi, Ahmedabad.

Nutritional content

In 2011, Subway introduced bread and gluten-free brownies to several locations in Texas. It also cuts the salt content of its sandwich by 15 percent.

In the UK and Ireland, Subway has reduced the salt content across its range by 33% and has committed to further reductions, in line with government targets. The subway series "Low Fat" is supported by the charity Heart Research UK.

Marketing

Subway is the second largest fast food advertiser in the United States, behind only McDonald's. It spends US $ 516 million on measured advertising in 2011.

Subway uses the advertisement slogan "Eat Fresh", and focuses on how the sandwiches are made from freshly baked bread and fresh ingredients, in front of customers to exact specifications, by employees called Subway "Sandwich Artists".

In 2005, Subway canceled the promotion of "Sub Club" stamps, citing more fake stamps due to online auction sites and the increasing availability of high-quality printers.

In November 2007, a US commercial on Subway featured cartoon characters Peter Griffin (from FOX's Family Guy ) promoting the new Feast Subway sandwich. Subway also uses the game "instant win", based on Scrabble game.

Subway runs a product placement campaign on the US TV series Chuck since its first season. When the ratings dropped in the second season, the campaign for "save Chuck" was launched for fans, prompting them to buy sub-footlong from Subway on April 27, 2009, the end date of the season. Tony Pace, a Subway marketing officer, calls it the best product placement chain chain "within a few years."

To celebrate National Sandwich Day on November 3, 2015, Subway offers Buy One sandwiches, Give One sandwich free promotion.

Subway has sponsored a number of sporting events, particularly NASCAR racing, including Subway 400 (2002-2004), Subway 500 (2003-2007), Subway Fresh 500 (2005-2013) and Subway Firecracker 250 (2009-2016). Subway sponsored the ice hockey tournament Subway Super Series from 2009-2014.

Jared Fogle

Jared Fogle is the national spokesperson for companies in the US beginning in January 2000, giving lectures on healthy living and appearing in advertisements. Fogle first became a concern in his native Indiana by claiming that he lost more than  £ 200 in part by eating at Subway. From 2008, it was rarely displayed because the company was marketing with more emphasis on a "5 dollar footlong" campaign. Subway connects between one-third and a half of its growth from 1998 to 2011 to Fogle, equivalent to tripling size. Subway broke with Fogle on August 18, 2015, amid hopes that he will plead guilty to child pornography and child abuse allegations, which were confirmed the following day. In November 2015, he was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison.

In December 2015, after the removal of Fogle from its marketing, Subway introduced a new marketing campaign, "Founded on Fresh". The campaign focuses on the establishment and early history of Subway, and features Fred DeLuca, as played by his son Jonathon. New campaigns degrade the use of celebrity jingles and support (in addition to "targeted" sports marketing), which focussed on the quality of its products, and specialized products. Chief advertising officer Chris Carroll explains that the focus on fat, calories, and weight loss is "what's fresh", and that the new campaign will focus more on the source of Subway materials, such as the release of antibiotics. processed meats. Carroll also explained that a new strategy was being developed before the controversy involving Fogle.

$ 5 footlongs

In 2008, Subway began offering all-round submarine sandwiches (excluding premium and double-meat varieties) for five dollars, in the continental United States and Canada, as "limited time only" promotions. "Five Dollar Footlongs" quickly became the company's most successful promotion. Upon completion of the initial promotion, Subway requested customer's response to make a permanent "$ 5 Footlong Everyday Value Menu" that offers some $ 5 footlong sandwiches. In 2011, there has been a monthly spin of $ 5 footlong.

In October 2011, a similar promotion was launched in the UK. Customers can purchase one of nine submarines and any beverage for Ã, Â £ 3 (for sub six inches) or Ã, Â £ 5 (for footlong).

In 2012, San Francisco stopped a five-dollar promotion because of the higher costs of doing business in the city. From June 2014 until the end of that year, several Subway locations began to stop the $ 5 dollar promotion. On November 1, 2014, Subway halted a five-dollar promotion, replacing it with a $ 6 Simple Menu that included a six-inch selection with drinks and a selection of cakes or chips.

On February 4, 2016, all classic footlong was declared set at a new charge of $ 6 each.

On January 1, 2018, $ 5 promotions returned with a five-dollar walk of $ 4.99 from five subs, at participating locations.

Italian Hero

In early 2017, Subway introduced Italian Hero, and advertised it with a campaign that described it as an authentic Italian-Italian sandwich. Two comedy venues feature stereotyped Italian-American characters in and around the New York/New Jersey tenement, one of which includes a cameo by sports broadcaster Dick Vitale. Another ad featured Jeff Mauro of the Food Network, "King Sandwich", who is an Italian-American, discussing the nature and roles of different Italian meats and other ingredients.

Animal welfare

On December 28, 2015, Subway released a commitment to transition towards the 100% free egg supply chain by 2025.

On April 28, 2017, Subway released a chicken welfare policy stating that by 2024 or sooner, 100% of US chicken products will be produced according to Global Animal Partnership (GAP) standards for higher welfare breeds, enhanced environments (including lighting, litter, and enrichment), increased levels of activity and optimized storage density, and better slaughter methods. To ensure compliance, Subway chicken suppliers will be on the third party to be audited with updates communicated annually.

The policy announcement follows a national campaign led by high school animal activist Lia Hyman in coordination with the animal protection NGO The Humane League. On April 20, 2017, Hyman and a group of activists traveled to the Subway global headquarters in Connecticut to send more than 53,000 signatures from campaign supporters and staged a demonstration outside the building after they were denied entry.

Controversy

Hepatitis A contamination

In September 1999, at least 32 customers in the northern Seattle area contracted hepatitis A after eating contaminated food with the virus at two Subway outlets. Viruses, which are spread by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with infected feces, infect the liver that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and fever. Subsequent investigations found that staff failed to comply with thorough hand washing and the use of plastic gloves during food preparation. The class action suit on behalf of 31 victims has been settled for $ 1.6 million. The most severely affected victims - a 6-year-old boy - suffered from acute liver failure and required a liver transplant. He was awarded $ 10 million in an out-of-court settlement in 2001. A previous hepatitis A outbreak in 1996 also involved a Subway outlet in the Seattle area, although no legal action was produced.

In April 2015, the Arkansas Health Department issued a public warning that customers eating at a Subway outlet in Morrilton, Arkansas, might get infected after an employee tested positive for the virus.

Sandwich Size

On February 2, 2007, KNXV-TV (with the help of the Arizona Department of Weights and Sizes) reported that three "Subantge Subway" sandwiches, nominally 3 feet (91 cm) each, were actually 2 feet 8 inches (81 cm ), 2 feet 8.25 inches (81.92 cm), and 2 feet 8.5 inches (82.6 cm) in length. The maximum allowable length variance in Arizona is 3% (1.08 inches (2.7cm), for three sub-feet). The report also shows the box designed to store this sandwich is 2 feet 10.75 inches (88.27 cm) in length; shorter than the maximum allowable variance. Responding to the report, Subway says it is re-evaluating its advertising, training and packaging material to the specific or implicit length of the Subs Subsidiary, and advises the franchisee to only discuss with the customer the expected number of portions rather than the specific length of measurement.

In January 2013, an Australian teenager, Matt Corby, complained on Facebook that the "footlong" Subway sandwich was only 11 inches (28 cm) in length, not 1 foot (30 cm). Subway responded by saying, "Regarding the size of the bread and calling it on foot, 'Subway Footlong' is a registered trademark as a descriptive name for sub sold in Subway Restaurants and is not meant to be a long measure." The discovery during the next class action suit revealed that most of the Subway sandwiches are the length advertised. The $ 530,000 settlement was released from court in 2017 because it is "absolutely worthless" to consumers.

Franchise relationship

In 1995, Underground Grocery Store, Fred DeLuca, Peter Buck, and Doctor Associates Inc. responsible for breach of contract. The Illinois jury gave Nicholas and Victoria Jannotta more than $ 10 million in damages after finding a breach of contract and lease. The plaintiffs claimed that the defendants had misrepresented the value of the assets of the Subway Sandwich Shops (the leasing company used by the Physicians Associates for franchising purposes) when negotiating the 1985 lease agreement.

The small business committee of the US House of Representatives studied the franchise industry from 1992 to 1998. Dean Sagar noted, "The subway is the biggest problem in franchising and emerges as one of the main examples of any abuse you can think of." In 1989, the US Small Business Administration refused a small business loan to Subway franchise owners until Subway abolished a contract clause that gave it the power to seize and purchase any franchise for no reason. The Dallas Morning News reported Subway has confiscated Subway shop owned by American soldier Leon Batie Jr. in 2006 when he served in Afghanistan. He has been deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom in March 2005, three years after buying his first restaurant. Batie accused Subway of violating the US Civil Servicemembers Rescue Act. He filed a federal suit against Subway, which was dismissed. He then filed a lawsuit in state court, in Dallas County, Texas. Both sides stipulated "mutually beneficial provisions" and secrets in January 2010.

UK VAT Care

In October 2010, the Subway franchise in the UK lost the appeal of the high court, against standard VAT payments on all toasted subs, as required by HM Revenue and Customs. So, in the UK, sub-roast pulls VAT, while the sub is cold, eaten from the premises, it is not. Competitors like Quiznos & amp; McDonald's does not pay VAT for the same food.

In March 2012, British Treasury Secretary George Osborne announced plans to close the gap that allows Subway's competitors to offer hot food without paying VAT. The law is expected to take effect from October 2012 onwards, but the government withdrew plans to apply VAT initially hot food allowed to cool naturally on May 28, 2012. In June 2012, Subway launched a "Cheers to Tax" campaign to put pressure on government to drop VAT on a toasted sandwich, as has been done for hot savory food.

Casey's trademark case against Subway

On January 31, 2011, Subway lawyer Valerie Pochron, writing to Casey's General Stores, a chain of Iowa-based shops, demanded a small chain to stop using the term "footlong" in advertisements for a 12-inch sandwich. Subway threatens to sue. As a result, in February 2011, General Store Inc.'s Case petitioned in US District Court in Des Moines, searching for a legal statement that the word "footlong" did not violate the underground rights. Casey further seeks a statement that the word "footlong" is a generic description of a one-foot sandwich. Prior to serving his complaint at Subway, Casey voluntarily dismissed his actions, ending the litigation.

The Subway trademark application for "footlong" has not been approved by the federal government. Subway has attempted to register it with the US Patent and Trademark Office twice. This was filed on November 8, 2007, and June 4, 2009. Yum Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and other non-Canadian A & W locations), Long John Silver and other competitors opposed the application.

Materials

Subway made changes to its bread after food blogger and activist Vani Hari collected more than 50,000 signatures in a petition. Subway removes azodicarbonamide from its bread. Prior to Vani Hari's petition, Subway had been using azodicarbonamide as a bread conditioner, to whiten the dough and allow sandwich sandwiches to bake faster. The material is still used by other fast food restaurants.

In August 2015, Vani Day re-applying for Subway along with the Natural Resources Defense Council, Friends of the Earth, the Food Safety Center, the US Public Interest Research Group to commit to the purchase of meat produced without the regular use of antibiotics and provides a timeline for doing so. In October 2015, Subway announced it would make the transition to a chicken raised without antibiotics by 2016 and turkey within the next 2-3 years, and would also transition beef and pork raised without antibiotics by 2025.

Soy protein on chicken products

In an investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) consumer broadcasting series that aired in February 2017, chickens from five fast food restaurants tested the lab to determine constituents. While DNA testing found between 84.9% and 89.4% of DNA from other restaurant chicken products to chicken DNA, with unidentifiable residual plant DNA, in two Subway chicken products tested, 53.6% and 42.8% DNA found. into chicken, with the rest mostly soy. Although the list of food ingredients does indicate soy protein as a constituent of both chicken products, Subway states that the proportions are less than or equal to 1%, and that the discovery of about 50% soybean DNA does not represent the true amount of soy in the product. Subway has called the CBC report "completely wrong and misleading" and demanded that it be revoked, a request not approved by the CBC in July 2017. Meanwhile, Subway Canada stated that it is investigating with its suppliers to ensure that the proportion of soy protein according to expectations.

According to the Subway website, the ingredients in the US store may differ from the ingredients in Canadian shops. Both countries include soy protein in chicken strips, but only the US version states that it is present in 2% or less. The Canadian version includes soy as an ingredient in chicken patty, but the US version does not.

In April 2017, Subway sued CBC, as well as a reporter and two producers, for $ 210 million, accused the CBC of acting "carelessly and maliciously", and that "this false statement... published and republished, maliciously and without cause or reason , to global audiences, which has resulted in money losses to plaintiffs. "The CBC stands by its report, stating that DNA testing is done by independent and credible experts. CBC's Emma BÃÆ' Â © dard states that Subway has not provided an alternative explanation for the results of DNA tests obtained by CBC.
