AstroTurf is a surface brand of artificial grass games. The original AstroTurf product is a short stack synthetic grass. Since the early 2000s, AstroTurf has marketed a higher system that uses fillers to replicate the natural grass better. The main reason for combining AstroTurf in the field of games is to avoid the cost of laying and maintenance of natural grass and to maximize hours of use. Today, AstroTurf is a group from SportGroup, a family of sports companies.

Histori
The original AstroTurf brand product was created in 1965 by Donald L. Elbert, James M. Faria, and Robert T. Wright. It was patented in 1965 and originally sold under the name "ChemGrass". It was renamed AstroTurf by a company employee named John A. Wortmann after its first publicized use at the Houston Astrodome stadium in 1966.
Initial iterations of the short stack of grass swept through the main stadia, but the product did indeed need improvement. Concerns over directionality and traction lead the R & D department of Monsanto to apply the textured nylon system. By implanting the texture of the nylon after being extruded, the product becomes very uniform.
In 1987, Monsanto consolidated AstroTurf's management, marketing, and technical activities in Dalton, Georgia, as AstroTurf Industries, Inc. In 1988, Balsam AG purchased all capital stocks of AstroTurf Industries, Inc. In 1994, Southwest Recreational Industries, Inc. (SRI) acquired the AstroTurf brand. In 1996, SRI was acquired by American Sports Products Group Inc.
While AstroTurf was an industry leader throughout the late 20th century, other companies emerged in the early 2000s. FieldTurf, AstroTurf's main competitor since the early 2000s, markets high-stack polyethylene grass products. This third generation grass, as is known, changes the market landscape. Although SRI succeeded in marketing AstroPlay, a third-generation grass product, the increasingly fierce competition made way for lawsuits. In 2000, SRI was awarded $ 1.5 million in lawsuit after FieldTurf was deemed to have lied to the public by making false statements about his own product and making false claims about AstroTurf and AstroPlay products.
Despite their legal victory, increased competition takes its toll. In 2004, SRI declared bankruptcy. Out of the bankruptcy process, the Association of Textile Management, Inc. (TMA) of Dalton, Georgia, acquired the AstroTurf brand and other assets. TMA began marketing AstroTurf brand under AstroTurf, LLC. In 2006, the General Sports Venue (GSV) became TMA's marketing partner for the AstroTurf brand for the American market. AstroTurf, LLC deals with AstroTurf marketing worldwide.
In 2009, TMA acquired GSV to enter the market as a direct seller. AstroTurf, LLC focuses its efforts on research and development, which has spurred rapid growth. AstroTurf introduces new product features and installation methods, including AstroFlect (heat reduction technology) and indoor prefabricated (indoor, climate-controlled inlaying). AstroTurf also introduced a product called "RootZone" consisting of wrinkled fibers designed to wrap the infill. This product has been adopted by many professional organizations and academies in the United States.
In 2016, SportGroup Holding announces that it will buy AstroTurf, along with related manufacturing facilities. The AstroTurf brand now operates in North America as AstroTurf Corporation.
