Sinopsis

Michael Scott (Steve Carell) returns from his rejuvenated Jamaican vacation, and directs the Party Planning Committee to throw a luau themed party in a warehouse to accompany an annual inventory. When Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) saw Jan Levinson (Melora Hardin) on the fringes of a photo from Michael's vacation, she confessed to the documentary crew that she and Jan went to Jamaica together.

Michael tried to send another holiday photo to Todd Packer (David Koechner) as a travel proof, but mistakenly chose "Packaging" instead of "Packer" from the address menu, sending photos to the entire warehouse, including Darryl Philbin (Craig Robinson), warehouse supervisor. Photos are quickly forwarded throughout the office and beyond. Michael enlists Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) help in preventing its spread, but this effort is largely ineffective.

Karen Filippelli (Rashida Jones) is angry with Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) because he objected to the prospect of Karen moving into a two-block apartment from her own home. Pam assures Jim that he does not make sense, and Jim accepts her advice and apologizes to Karen. Pam told the documentary crew that she was happy to help Jim, but Dwight walked over him crying personally. She awkwardly tried to console her, though she misunderstood: "So, are you PMSing so bad, huh?"

During the luau/inventory, Jan arrives at the office to talk to Michael personally. Michael was afraid that Jan was there to expose her to a widespread photo, but she did not seem to realize it, instead admitting her interest in her for all the reasons.

Production

"Back from Vacation" was written by Justin Spitzer, a staff writer who joined The Office in his third season. The episode is the first script for this series. Spitzer discovers Jan's last scene with Michael - where he hopes he'll shout at him for their outstanding photos but tells them they live together - especially hard to write. Spitzer was not sure how to arrange the scene, and finally asked for advice from other series writers. They decided that Jan would give Michael a "crazy" response. Sitting on the panel of television writers at Northwestern University, Spitzer briefly explains the reason, "Jan nuts. He has some bad psychiatrists who give bad advice." He praised the benefits of a "good writer room," where "the scene goes to this place. You'll never go alone."

"Back from Vacation" was directed by Julian Farino, who was then responsible for directing "The Deposition", a fourth season episode featuring some of the consequences of Michael's released image. Recurrent actors Creed Bratton, Ed Helms, Rashida Jones, Craig Robinson, and David Koechner featured as guest stars on "Back from Vacation".

The three-season DVD contains a number of deleted scenes, such as Michael arriving from Jamaica at the airport, wearing warm weather clothing, Dwight, Meredith, Angela and Kevin separately reacting to the news that Michael took Jan to Jamaica, and Jan retained the ruse that he was in Scottsdale while talking to a colleague at the Corporate, who saw the photo on his computer. Additional scenes include Dwight complaining about Jim's pranks when Michael is on vacation, Roy helps Ryan with inventory, Andy challenges Dwight to the stack-box race, and Meredith climbs on the shelf, which falls and traps him.

This episode generally draws positive reviews from critics. Brian Zoromski from IGN rated "Return of the Vacation" 9.7/10, an indication of an "extraordinary" episode. Highlights highlighted include the opening sequence, Carell's appearance, and Pam's storyline with Jim and Karen. Zoromski concludes in his review that "with so much attention to detail, realistic character reactions, and very few over-the-top comedy moments, 'Back from Vacation' is one of the best episodes of Office this season. We're so glad they're back. "Michael Sciannamea AOL TV expressed surprise that Jan was accompanying Michael in his vacation and soon wanted to find out more about their relationship. He was also interested in Dwight's efforts to entertain Pam, to PMS's jokes when he thought it would be very interesting if Dwight really cheered him and offered her friendship. "Sciannamea concluded that" this is just a great episode. Well written, act well, and ask you to beg for more at the end. What more can you ask for? "

Writing for Entertainment Weekly Abby West focused on Carell's acting, explaining that "Michael's way of boasting and his healthy fear of offending Jan played on Steve Carell's face was fantastic." From his braggadocio on the phone with Todd Packer (Packer!) to his death marching up the stairs to face Jan, that is a wonderful thing. "BuddyTV Oscar Dahl believes that" Returning from Vacation "is" one of the best two or three of the season ", argues that "simplicity" is the key to the success of the series. Dahl continued, "Every episode premise can be entirely earthly and unimportant, it will still laugh at the situation at hand." We also have some good developments in the Jim-Pam-Karen triangle, with Pam advising Jim's relationship, then crying at her eyes out afterwards.Perhaps the best scene in the episode saw Dwight cheer him up. "Television Without Pity assessing the episode with A.
