A ham and cheese sandwich is a common sandwich type. This is made by putting cheese and slices of ham between two slices of bread. Bread is sometimes buttery and/or grilled. Vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions, or pickled slices can also be included. Different types of mustard and mayonnaise are also common.
Slices of bread, sliced ââcheese, and cooked ham slices are available in Western supermarkets and as a result ham and cheese sandwiches are quick and easy to prepare. They are a common component of packed lunches.

Histori
As remembered by Harry Stevens' ballpark concessionaire in an interview in 1924, in 1894 ham and cheese sandwiches were the only food sold in the New York baseball park; frankfurter was introduced in 1909.
An English lady, writing in 1923 from her journey through Ellis Island en route to the US, noted:
- I was frightened and trembling, after hearing so many stories about the alien abuse received there.... The waiters were very kind and not at all rude with us. It was midnight... in a few moments the porters came with a basket of excellent ham and cheese sandwiches and coffee for adults and milk for the babies.
Richard E. Byrd took ham and cheese sandwiches on his polar flight in 1926 as well as 1927 transatlantic fliers Chamberlin and Levine.

Origins
The origin of ham and cheese bread has been debated for several years by culinary intellectuals. The leading theory of who first started producing ham, cheese, and bread dishes is mentioned in The Larousse Gastronomique 1961. Here he notes that Patrick Connolly, an Irish immigrant from the 18th century to England, sells bakery which:
"Combining the remains of a pig, healed and sliced ââwith a Leicester cheese topper and an egg yolk kiek (a type of mayonnaise) in a round bread roll. The dish is rather unimaginatively known as Connolly and is sometimes still called like this in some parts of the Midlands in England. "
In the UK, the common additions to ham and cheese sandwiches are pickled (sweet, vinegary chutney originally by Branston); This snack came to be known as a ham sandwich, cheese, and pickle.
Type
In French cuisine, croque-monsieur is a kind of ham and cheese sandwich. It is topped with cheese and baked or fried.
