Sinopsis

Bill Mor is a middle-aged history and Latin teacher in a public school. He is married to Nan and has two children, Donald and Felicity. Mor has a political ambition to stand as a Labor candidate, although his wife firmly opposes such ambitions. At dinner friends, he got acquainted with Rain Carter, a young artist who had arrived at school to paint a portrait of Demoyte, the former principal. Mor shows Rain Carter around town. They are seen together by a friend of Mor Tim Burke, who suspects Mor and Carter may be having an affair.

On one trip, Mor wanted to show Miss Carter a small creek outside the city. Miss Carter allows Mor, who has no license, drives through heavy terrain, but the car is jammed and damaged. Mor came home late from this misfortune but chose not to tell his wife about the incident. Nan and Felicity went for a holiday in Dorset, and a love affair between Mor and Rain Carter developed during this time.

Nan comes home early from the holidays and Mor's surprise kneels in front of Rain with his head on his lap. In despair, Nan goes to Tim Burke. After a moment of mutual attraction between the two, Burke advised Nan to return to her husband and not to damage their relationship. However, Bill finds himself unable to release Rain. He was taken by him to an exhibition of his work in London and was very impressed with the photographs.

Meanwhile, the son of Mor, Don climbs the school tower with a friend and is saved from the dangers of his father's fall, which Don then expelled from school. He ran away from home and lost for days. During his absence, there is a function in school for the opening of new portraits. Nan gave a public speech at this meeting, praising and encouraging her husband's political ambitions. Rain, who knew nothing about Mor's side of life, decided to abandon him not in the path of his ambitions and decided to return to France.

That night, he painted until the early hours of the morning, changing Demoyte's face in portraits and, by dawn, had left. Don went home.

Title

There is only one reference to the 'sand castle' in this book. From Iris Murdoch's The Sandcastle , Chapter Five:

"I remember, when I was a kid, looking at pictures in the books of boys and girls in England playing in the sand and making sand castles - and I tried to play in my sand, but the Mediterranean is not a place to play. dirty and very dry Tidings never wash sand or make it strong When I try to make sand castles, the sand will just run between my fingers, it is too dry to put together, and even when I pour the sea water up, the sun will dry it all at once.
