The Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra ( Zelman Symphony ) is the longest community orchestra in Melbourne, Australia.
Founded by amateur Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) player in 1933, this orchestra remembers the contribution of Australian music from former conductor and leader, Alberto Zelman (Junior). It has given at least three concerts each year since then.
Herbert Davis is the founding conductor (1933-59). He was followed by Paul McDermott (1960-73), then Leon La Gruta (1974-77). Short-term guest conductors cover the next two years until Philip Carrington was appointed in 1980. He served as an orchestra conductor from 1980 to 1999. Since 2000, the orchestra works under a number of famous conductors in Melbourne amateur and professional music. among others, including Philip Carrington, Phillip Green, Peter Handsworth, Gerald Keuneman, Janis Laurs, Rick Prakhoff, Tom Pugh, Joannes Roose and Mark Shiell. Mark Shiell was later appointed Principal Conductor & amp; The artistic director of the orchestra in 2010 and served in this capacity until 2017 when he goes to focus once again on the flute. Rick Prakhoff started his role in 2018.
There are only six appointed counselors from the orchestra: Bertha Jorgensen (1933-45), Connie Ziebell (1946-82), Donald Hancock (1982-2001), Yik Ming Chim (2001-2004), Mary Johnston (2009-2014)) and Susan Pierotti (2016-).
Today the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra consists of about 60 players in a full symphony ensemble, performing symphonies and classical, romantic and twentieth-century concerts with a good guest solo. The orchestra performed four concerts a year in Melbourne, including the prestigious Concerto Piano Concerto Competition from Boroondara Eisteddfod. In addition, the orchestra takes one or two concerts each year "on the road" to Victoria's country location which includes Daylesford, Drouin, Wendouree (Ballarat) and Yea.
The orchestra celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2013-2014 with two performances for viewers of Mahler's Epic Eighth Symphony capacity - "Symphony of a Thousand" - in Melbourne Town Hall. In what is believed to be the "first" for the Australian Community Orchestra, the show involves more than 580 players including an enlarged Zelman Symphony of about 125 players led by Guest Concertmaster, Wilma Smith, Master Concert from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO), and featuring many major guest players from MSO and the orchestra and other top music institutions. David Macfarlane plays a remarkable organ, a choir of 370 formed from nine community choirs, and 80 children's choirs involving students from Southern Voices and St Catherine's School, Toorak. The soloists are some of Australia's best players:
- Antoinette Halloran, Soprano 1, Magna Peccatrix
- Rosamund Illing, Soprano 2, Una poenitentium
- Nicole Car, Mater Gloriosa
- Karen vanSpall, Alto 1, Mulier Samaritana
- Liane Keegan, Alto 2, Maria Aegyptiaca
- Jason Wasley, Tenor, Doctor Marianus
- Andrew Jones, Baritone, Father Ecstaticus
- Adrian Tamburini, Bass, Father Profundu
The orchestra celebration ended in great style with a performance before the estimated 7,000 people in Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl on February 22, 2014. At the invitation of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO), Zelman Symphony performs a Russian Favorite program as a curtain buffer for MSO's own performance later in the evening.
