History

The Tularosa Basin has been inhabited for at least 11,000 years. There are signs of previous occupants in the area such as the Clovis culture, the Folsom culture, the Archaic period people, and the Formative stage. Mescalero Apache had lived in Tularosa Basin when Spain came in 1534, and Oral history of Mescalero said they always lived there. The Spaniards built the chapel at La Luz (about 5 miles (8.0 km) from the future location of Alamogordo) in 1719, although La Luz was not completed until about 1860.

Alamogordo City was founded in June 1898, when El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, led by Charles Bishop Eddy, extended the railroads into the city. Eddy influences the design of the community, which includes wide roads and tree-lined irrigation channels. Charles Eddy's sister, John Arthur Eddy, named the new town of Alamogordo ("big cotton tree" in Spanish) after a bunch of cotton trees he remembered from the Pecos River area. When Alamogordo was laid out in 1898, the east-west streets were labeled numerical, while the north-south roads were named after the state. Currently White Sands Boulevard is then called Pennsylvania Avenue.

Several government buildings in Alamogordo were built by the Progress Administration, a government program created in 1935 in response to the Great Depression. These include the Otero County Administration Building at 1101 New York Avenue, a Pueblo-style building originally built as the main US Post Office in 1938. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The main portico door featured a fresco by Peter Hurd completed in 1942. The Post Office moved in 1961, and the building was used by a succession of Federal agencies and was known as the Federal Building. The last Federal agency he occupied was the US Forest Service which used it as the Lincoln National Forest base until October 2008, when the agency moved into a newly built building. The ownership of the building was transferred to the Otero County government and many government offices were moved from the Courthouse to the new Administration Building in February 2009. Alamogordo briefly made international news in late 2001 when Christ Community Church held public books in Harry Potter Series, and some other series, on December 30th.

Geography

In 2010, Alamogordo had a total area of 19.3 square miles (50.0 km 2 ), all land. The city is located at an altitude of 4,336 feet (1,322 m) on the west side of the Sacramento Mountains and on the eastern edge of Tularosa Basin. It lies within the gap of the Rio Grande and in the northernmost part of the Chihuahuan Desert. Low tectonic activity in the Tularosa Basin. The native plants of this region are typical of the foothills of southern New Mexico and include the creosote shrubs, mesquite, saltbush, cottonwood, desert willow, and many species of cactus and yucca.

Tularosa Basin is an endorheic or closed basin; that is, there is no water flowing out of it. Because of this and because of the geology of the region, water in the basin is difficult: it has a very high total soluble solids concentration, over 3,000 mg/l. The National Desalination Research Facility of Tanah Payau Water, a Reclamation laboratory conducting research and development on brackish water desalination, is located in Alamogordo. The gypsum crystals of the White Pasir National Monument are formed on Lake Lucero. Water flows from mountains carrying dissolved gypsum and collected in Lake Lucero. After the water dries, the wind takes the gypsum crystals and passes them over the basin.

Initially the main industry was logging for rail links. The founders of the railway were also eager to find a big city that would survive after the train tracks had been completed; they formed the Alamogordo Improvement Company to develop the area, making Alamogordo the first example of a planned community. Alamogordo Upgrading Company owns all the land, walks the streets, builds first houses and commercial buildings, donates land to a college, and places limited agreements on any deed prohibiting the making of, intoxicating, or selling liquor.

Tourism became an important part of the local economy from the creation of the White Pasir National Monument in 1934. Military Impact

Holloman Air Force Base, located about 3 miles (4.8 km) west of the city limits, is Alamogordo's largest corporate resident, and has a major influence on the local economy. According to some estimates, Holloman contributes half of Alamogordo's economy. According to 49 Fighter Wing Public Affairs office, in January 2008 Holloman directly employed 6,111 personnel with gross salaries of $ 266 million. This indirectly creates 2,047 other jobs with a salary of $ 77 million. An estimated 6,700 military retirees live in the area. Counting USAF and German Air Force personnel there are 1,383 active military and 1,641 military dependents living on the base and 2,765 active militaries and 2,942 military dependents living outside the base.

Economic development

The Otero County Economic Development Council is a non-profit organization founded in 1984. Its general focus is on job creation and recruiting and expanding business in Otero County, including helping them meet business rules in New Mexico and queuing for funding. The Otero County Public Health Council prepares an annual health profile with many facts and figures on health in the Otero District. Otero County is ranked at the top of the state's health rankings. New Mexico is almost at the bottom of the national rank, for example, at number 38 in the 2007 United Health Foundation report, but is slowly increasing (it was 40 in 2005). When the features that promote health are considered, rather than the health of the population, Alamogordo is classified as one of the 50 healthiest places to live in the United States, among six in New Mexico. Civilian movers such as the Chamber of Commerce publish this rank.
