Banacek is an American detective TV series starring George Peppard that aired on NBC's network from 1972 to 1974. The series is part of NBC's Wednesday Mystery Movie </i> anthology. It alternated in time slots with some other events, but was the only one of them that survived beyond his first season.

Premise
Peppard plays Thomas Banacek, a friendly Polish-American freelance investigator living in Boston, who solves the seemingly impossible theft problem (see the mystery of the locked space). He was then collected from the insurance company 10% of the insured value of the restored property. One of Banacek's verbal signs is an excerpt of a strange but surprisingly strange phrase "Polish" such as:
- "If you're not sure that it's a potato borscht, there might be orphans working in the mine."
- "Even though the hippo does not have a sting, the wise man would rather sit near the bee."
- "A truly wise person never plays a jump with a unicorn."
- "When a wolf chases after your sling, throw a raisin cake, but do not stop to make a cake."
- "Just because a cat has her children in the oven does not make it a biscuit."
- "You can read all the books in my son's library, but the cheese will still smell after four days."
- "No matter how warm a smile on the Sun face, the cat still has her children under the veranda."
- "Even a thousand zloty notes can not knock dance."
Part of the joke is that Ralph Manza as Banacek's driver, Jay Drury, often asks, "What does it mean, boss?" Banacek also has a walking agreement with his driver for a 10% share of Banacek's 10% if he solves the crime. Mr. Drury has never lost a potential solution that Banacek will always fail with the next line. Another recurring error is for other characters who mispronounce his name, often, especially in the case of rivals, deliberately. The name "Banaczek" (as uttered in the show) is actually quite rare in Poland.
Also featured are Murray Matheson as the owner of a rare bookstore and information source Felix Mulholland and Christine Belford as Carlie Kirkland, Banacek and always-rival lover. Felix is ââthe only character of the series to ever call Banacek by his first name.
Banacek's success as an investigator enabled him to live well. He owns a house at 85 Mt. Vernon Street, (the same house used in The Thomas Crown Affair starring Steve McQueen) at Beacon Hill in Boston. He has a limo and a driver. He owns and drives the antique Packard 1941 convertible. He has a cell phone radio in every car when the device is unusual and expensive. Banacek is intelligent, educated, cultured and hospitable. She is a sympathetic woman who loves to accompany beautiful women, but she is a clever person and can engage in tough hand-to-hand combat when it is needed.
The premise of the Thomas Crown Affair is that a bored and wealthy Boston businessman (McQueen) masterminds crime, leading to ingenuity with an insurance investigator (Faye Dunaway) who collects a 10 percent fee from an insurance company if he settles the case this. Banacek borrows elements from characters and plot points.

Production
In general, this series was taken in Universal Studios backlot, although the scene location was filmed around Los Angeles in an area that could be used for Boston, or the nearby countryside. The episode titled "If Max Is So Smart, Why Did He Not Tell Us Where He Is?" shot on location at the California Institute of Art around the time the first school opened. "Ten Thousand Dollars Page A" was filmed at the Pasadena Art Museum, later known as Pasadena Museum of Modern Art and now the Norton Simon Museum of Art.
1969 American Motors AMX made special by George Barris for the second regular season episode. The car was known as the AMX-400 and is now owned by a car collector. Other sustainable cars in the series are 1941 Packard 180 with Victoria's body designed by Howard "Holland" Darrin (license plate 178344), Corvette 1973 (driven by Ms. Kirkland) and 1973 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine (KL 17811 mobile phone number). In keeping with the exotic car theme and humor between Banacek and his driver Jay Drury, he was even driven in a MB Willys, Jeep CJ2A, and CJ6, as well as the new Ford/De Tomaso Pantera.
In preparation for both pilots, first, and then the second season the players went to Boston and filmed various background scenes. These scenes are then used through the series and are specifically featured in the opening scenes including Banacek paddling on the Charles River and walking through the Government Center. In the pilot, Banacek's car pulled into his Beacon Hill home, the historic second Harrison Gray Otis House located at 85 Mount Vernon Street. In other episodes, the scene is displayed in the Public Garden, the entrance to the Felix bookstore at 50 Beacon Street, and the Esplanade. Boston movie pieces were performed by the second unit and directed by Peppard himself.
Reception
Although the show has a mixture of humor and complex plots, it never yields a strong judgment. Nevertheless, the show was well received by critics. In addition, the Polish American Congress gave a series of awards to describe Polish Americans in a good way.
Cancellation
Banacek was well received by television critics, and as a result was appointed for the third season. However, before the third season can begin, Peppard comes out of the show to prevent his ex-wife, Elizabeth Ashley, receiving a greater percentage of his earnings as part of their divorce settlement. This complication ended the opportunity to revive Banacek during the Peppard term. A & amp; E continues to playback the Banacek broadcast in syndication.
In Popular Cultures
By 2018, Banacek is the subject of a long-episode parody on The Simpsons , which refers everything from the storytelling format to the shoot, including the Goldenberg theme song..
