History
The $ 10.5 million Huntington Civic Center was completed in 1977 and was the largest in the state of West Virginia when it opened.
At that time, the city felt it would not be able to accommodate Marshall University basketball, and the arena was built in a location where Marshall objected, and used a design that was not sport-friendly. Thus Marshall remained in the older Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse and then built his own arena inside the campus, Cam Henderson Center, in 1981. At first the building was very successful; However, completion of a larger arena near Charleston, and a 25-year delay in the construction of what became Pullman Square caused the building to be an effort to lose money for the city. The city then decided to turn the building into a private management.
From 1993 to 2000, the facility, at the time called the Civic Huntington Arena, was home to Huntington Blizzard from ECHL. At this time the arena is modified to accommodate hockey and other team sports. In addition, this arena served as home to River Cities LocoMotives from NIFL during its sole season in 2001. The facility then serves as a home for Huntington American Indoor Football Association Hero. The team moved into the arena after spending its inaugural season in 2006 at Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse.
The naming rights for the arena were purchased by Big Sandy Superstores, a network of furniture stores and tools in the area. This facility is currently managed by SMG.
The Ultimate Indoor Football League voted Huntington, West Virginia as the home of their second team. The team was named Huntington Hammers.

Remodeling
In the fall of 1997, $ 3.5 million was allocated in bonds to renovate an aging Civic Center; However, the work did not begin until 2000. The 20-year-old facility has not been renovated or maintained since its initial construction. The inside and exterior are painted gray and maroon, and the leaking roof is fixed. The conference area is expanded and kitchen facilities are upgraded. By the end of 2011 the building was closed for four months for another renovation, including the replacement of all seats. In 2012, the arena of buying basketball flooring from the Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse is about to be destroyed. The floor was originally installed in Cam Henderson Center and sold to Fieldhouse when the Henderson Center floor is currently installed. By the time the floor was purchased from Fieldhouse, it still had marks and logos from the era of the Mid-America Conference Marshall University.
