Cream City brick is a clay-made yellow cream or brick found around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the Menomonee River Valley and on the western edge of Lake Michigan. This brick is one of the most commonly used building materials in Milwaukee in the mid and late 19th century, giving this city the nickname "City of Cream" and a brick under the name "City of Cream bricks".

Characteristics

City Cream Bricks made of red clay contain high lime and sulfur content; This clay is common in the Wisconsin region, especially near Milwaukee. When the bricks are fired, they become creamy yellow.

Although light-colored when first made, the cream City Cream is porous, causing them to absorb dirt and other pollutants; this tends to make the structure built from them dark in color over time. Once the City of Cream bricks absorb pollutants, they are difficult to clean, a problem that recovery experts at Milwaukee have been facing since the 1970s. Initially, sandblasting was tried; However, it not only proved ineffective, but also damaged the bricks. Currently, chemical washing is accepted as the most effective method of cleaning City cream bricks. The historic Trimborn farmhouse in Greendale, Wisconsin is an example of a brick that has been cleansed to reveal its true color.

Structure built with City Cream bricks

The creamy city bricks are known for their durability; many of the buildings built with them in the 19th century still stand today. An example of Cream City's brick resistance is the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, built more than 125 years ago. However, since there are many brick makers in the area, the quality of the bricks is varied and some of the bricks are not manufactured correctly: The Big Sable Point Lighthouse is built from the Brick City Crime, but has been degraded so much in 35 years that it must be wrapped in iron coating. See also, Grosse Point Light, which should be wrapped in concrete.

Since the regional headquarters of the United States Lighthouse Council responsible for building lighthouses around Lake Michigan is located in Milwaukee, many of which are built with City Cream bricks, including Kenosha Light, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, McGulpin Point Light, Old Mackinac Point Light, and many others.

Cream City bricks are widely exported, making their way not only to American cities like Chicago and New York, but also to Western Europe, including Hamburg, Germany.
