A notification of death is sending an obituary to someone. Notice of death describes when someone receives the news of someone's death. There are many roles that contribute to the notification process of death. Notifier is the person who sends the notification of death. They can be volunteers, medical personnel, or law enforcement. The recipient is the person appointed to receive information about the deceased. Typically, the recipient is a family member or friend of the deceased person. Death education is provided for different types of jobs to deliver the news efficiently for each situation. Proper death notification allows the recipient to start the grieving process. The history of death notices dates back to human existence but there is always a different way of notification of death. Before the notification of the death of modern technology will be done via telegram, there is no similar means of transportation today which allows more formal notice required. During the 1800s and early notices the 1900s deaths were not as complicated as the process. There is no way to send written notice, so notice is left in the funeral home. Now as the world continues to advance, there are more requirements to follow. One of these requirements is that the name of the deceased is not released to an outside source until after 24 hours of the survivor being notified. One of the main reasons is that survivors are the first to know formally.

Death notifiers

The protocol for each notifier is different because each situation is unique. Police officers became very involved with most of the families dealing with death outside medical facilities. The news should be delivered directly, as soon as possible, with other officers, in plain and simple language, and with compassion. One of the main reasons there should be two people is that if someone has a negative reaction, there is additional support for them and support for the notifier if someone is hitting. Officers must enter the recipient's residence to make the situation more private. A minister, a clerical member who works in a hospital, nursing home, prison, armed forces, police, or emergency medical services can send out alternative news. The main purpose is to deliver the news of death, but also to help repair the emotionally damaged family and spirituality. He must also try to explain and understand the tragedy. Medics do not have time to bond with family and must deliver the news in an authoritative way then try to convince and release them. The United States military arrested the names of members who died until 24 hours after the family was notified.

For military notices, there are usually some people involved: the officer who notifies, a minister who accompanies the officer who notices throughout the process and who may also be helpful in delivering the news, a medical (if a fainting family member), and an officer who stays at in the car if family members react violently.

The US Army Manual states it

"The Next of Kin will soon be notified in a proper and understanding manner by a uniformed service representative who will wear the" A "Classroom uniform and present the soldier's appearance when making a notice."

It is the Army's policy to make a personal notice to the nearest closest family and the second closest family of the dead soldier within four hours of knowing death. Notifications must last from 0600 to 2200.

The process for notification of deaths in the military is a three-phase process. People who make notices are also in the military, and usually in a team of four members.

Phase 1 - This phase deals with logistical and personal preparation such as pointing out who will be in conversation.

Phase 2 - This phase involves driving home, knocking on the door, and stating

"I have been asked to let you know that your son has been reported dead in [city, state, country] at 0700 on August 26, 1991. [Briefly declares the situation.] On behalf of the Minister of Defense, I convey to you and your family , my deepest sympathy for your great loss ".

Phase 3 - This phase is when the team leaves home. The team leader must feel that the situation is under control before they leave the premises.

Denny Hayes, who spent fifteen years as pastor for the FBI's critical response team, said:

  • Always deliver bad news directly.
  • Always carry spouses ("95 percent of them bow to me for the actual conversation of words - nobody wants to be sad").
  • Skip euphemisms - they do not entertain anyone but the person who pronounces them.
  • Do not leave anyone until they have someone else to hold.

"You can not make it any better," said Dr. Nancy Davis, former head of counseling services for the FBI. "But you can certainly make it worse."

Recipient of death

Recipients of death include parents, children, friends, lovers, co-workers, and other survivors. Each recipient responds to the news in a different way because each relationship is unique to the deceased. Most parents want to hold their child's body and collect physical mementos. They often create memory boxes that contain children's fingerprints, hair locks, and/or clothing. The Center believes that parents should be encouraged to see their dead child several times to provide assistance. Children have unpredictable reactions to death, and depend on their age, previous experience with death, and emotional support around them. When telling a child about death, one must use real words to describe death and let them know that death is permanent. Children can understand death at a very young age so they must be told the truth about the situation. The announcer should answer the questions the child has and let the child express his feelings. When telling friends, the urge to look for closure of unresolved issues with the most efficient deceased.

Education of death in the profession

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) received a grant from the Department of Justice in 1988 to train police officers in notification of death. If it is done correctly, the recipient will be able to continue through the process of mourning. MADD started their death notice education program to create entertaining and professional death notices. Police officers should report most of the deaths compared to other jobs, which is why the education provided by MADD is very important. Licensed social workers work with health care professionals to create protocols to inform the family of the deceased. This includes having a family view of the body and talking to medical staff to answer questions about the situation and discussing the next steps to take.

Notifications in various settings

Doctors and other health care professionals are faced with more patient loss than they want to think about. Because of this, they are also responsible for coming to families with sad news. Along with law enforcement notices, doctors "do not receive special instructions about death notification skills" (Henderson, 2012). Due to lack of training, this makes bad news very stressful, which then makes the doctors more vulnerable to fatigue and becomes dissatisfied with the performance and task of their work (Henderson, 2012). Explaining what happens and being clear with family is very important when giving death notices, not using words that are difficult to understand is very important (Vandekieft, 2001). Notice of death can be resolved in, is the arrangement of office (work) and or hospital. In both of these settings, someone sends a notification in the space that can be run by the survivor himself. For example, when giving a death notice in a work setting, ask for permission from their supervisor and take them to a private room to send a notice. When giving death notices in hospital settings there is already a defined protocol because it is a large institution, but it will remain in a private space. When giving a death notice at the hospital, it is key that this notice is not made in public areas such as waiting rooms or hallways. Once the notification is complete there are various forms that survivors and information providers must resolve to help solve them. Apart from its form, the giver can also bring survivors to the body if the survivors choose to do so. The "last" part of the work to be completed by the individual informing the victim is to follow up and stay in touch while the family needs support and assistance in answering any questions about death.

Universal tip for death notices

Since the notification of death is a difficult task, there are universal guidelines, which can be used throughout the profession. Giving personal unfortunate news is important (Campbell, 1992), so ensuring families do not seek through social media, phone calls, or any other type of communication required. A person who tells will make sure the family that someone cares and is supported. Think before they speak, (Moldovan, 2009) and do not provide harmful information to families that can cause more pain. Ensuring notifications occur in a timely manner (Flaherty, 2005) although this may focus more on military and law enforcement, it is important for families. Finally, for the person making the notice (Vandekieft, 2001) they should allow themselves to sympathize with the loss of the family, without being overly emotional or loose as unconcerned. It is clear that no matter the profession, the notification of death must be done sensitively, clearly and efficiently.
