KFC's Double Down Sandwich: A Field Guide - Eater

The Double Down is a dish offered by the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant where the sandwich is made up of two pieces of fried chicken rather than the more usual rolls. Double Down contains bacon, cheese, and sauce in between two pieces of chicken fillet. The variants offered by KFC include roasted, not fried chicken fillets and fillets with a spicy layer of Zinger.

Africa

South Africa

KFC South Africa airs Double Down in March 2013. To get halal certification, bacon is replaced with a piece of processed smoked chicken.

Asia

India

In October 2017, burgers were introduced as a secret burger for the first week and are available for purchase for a number of invitations and their friends as part of a promotion. Within another week, the burger was unveiled into a "Double Down" burger and is available for purchase for all people for a limited time.

Japanese

On February 2, 2012, Double Down went on sale in Japan for a limited time as a Double Fillet Chicken.

Singapore

KFC Singapore launches Zinger Double Down on April 16, 2012. Instead of ordinary bacon, the Singapore version uses turkey bacon to meet halal standards. The latest release of Double Down includes a Hawaiian version, with pineapple slices and BBQ sauce.

Malaysia

KFC Malaysia introduced Double Down on September 25, 2012.

Philippines

In November 2010, Double Down was launched in a certain branch in the Philippines, the first in Asia. Almost a year later, in October 2011, KFC Philippines replaced it with Zinger Double Down, with spicy flavors and crispy skin. The product was discontinued in the Philippines in mid-2012, but was reintroduced in January 2014 along with a smaller version, Junior Double Down. It was stopped again in May 2014, but was relaunched in January 2015 for a limited time only, along with new variations, Double Down Dog. In January 2016, another new variation was introduced, Double Down G containing "crispy fried spinach" with "secret green sauce".

South Korea

Zinger Double Down goes on sale from 1 December 2012 to 1 March 2013, and re-released in October 2013 along with a variant named Zinger Double Down MAXX with additional patty chocolates and salsa. Both Zinger Double Down and Double Down MAXX are then added as a year-round menu in March 2014, and in April, the original Double Down is also available. In October 2014, Zinger Double Down KING was announced, with beef sauce and barbecue sauce amid two Zinger buns.

Europe

Denmark

Double Down was introduced in Denmark in January 2017.

German

Double Down was introduced in Germany and available until March 2017. The German version contains two strips of chicken, bacon, Monterey Jack and a special Double Down sauce by KFC.

French

KFC released Double Down to the French market in October 2014 as a limited edition product. It was then re-released in two flavors - Original Bacon and Spicy Zinger - in August 2015. And again with the 3rd taste of "Black Pepper" in September 2017.

Spanish

In March 2016, Double Down was introduced in Spain. The Spanish version has bacon, cheddar cheese and barbecue sauce in two pieces of chicken fillet. The ad slogan is "No apto para cobardes" (" Not for the coward ").

United Kingdom

The Double Down was released in the UK on October 9, 2017, after the launch of the previous few days, remaining available for six weeks to 19 November.

North America

Canada

On October 18, 2010, KFC restaurants in Canada started selling fried versions of Double Down for a limited time. It was reported that at the launch date, KFC in Victoria, British Columbia was sold out of Double Down at 2 pm. In French Canada, this is known as "Double Coup", roughly translated as "Double Punch". The Double Down was suspended in Canada on November 14, 2010, but on May 25, 2011, KFC announced it would be back at least for a while. In 2012, Double Down returns to Canada, again for a limited time. In August 2015, KFC Canada finally brought Double Down back after a three-year hiatus. Sandwich returned to Canada in March 2018, again after a three-year hiatus, as Waffle Double Down. This Double Down version features Belgian waffles between two spiced chicken fillets and a maple flavored aioli.

United States

KFC Double Down was initially tested for sale in Omaha, Nebraska, and Providence, Rhode Island. KFC announced it in an April Fools press release, and launched the item in the United States on April 12, 2010. It has been promoted through billboards and TV commercials saying it has "so many 100 percent premium chicken, we do not have no room for bread."

Originally a limited time offer that was supposed to expire on May 23, 2010, KFC reversed direction on May 19, 2010, stating that the item will remain unlimitedly available. The chain mentioned its popularity in overall sales, as well as videos of people who consume Double Down into a YouTube sensation. Stephen Colbert ate one at The Colbert Report , spurring the popularity of even more items.

Oceania

Australia and New Zealand

KFC Australia began selling Double Down (renamed The Double) with the tagline "make time for mantime" on March 30, 2011, for a limited time only. The Double succeeded in Australia, despite being criticized for being unhealthy. KFC Australia announced via their Facebook page that if they reach 500,000 likes, they will bring Double back to the Australian store for a limited period of two days. The page reaches 500,000 likes on June 15, 2012, and KFC announces that Double will go on sale on June 27 and 28. The Double reappears on the menu in December 2012, again for a limited time only.

Starting May 10, 2011, Double Down is available in New Zealand for a period initially limited to five weeks. Double Down was also brought back for one day only on March 31, 2012 exclusively in Dunedin to raise funds for the Otago Rugby Workers Union which face financial difficulties in early 2012. On July 24, 2012, KFC resumed sales of Double Down in New Zealand.

On October 28, 2016, KFC announced via Facebook that it will resell Double Down for a limited period of four weeks, as well as a new spin-off product called Hawaiian Double (beginning with bacon with pineapple), starting on November 1st. in response to an online campaign launched by Australia's 'Yeah the Boys' Facebook page.

Nutritional analysis

NPR compares the number of calories with McDonald's Premium Crispy Chicken Club Sandwich. Both baked and fried Double Down products have almost full day sodium in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines. The Los Angeles Times show that the Double Down roast chicken has fewer calories and less fat than the fried chicken Double Down (460 versus 540 calories, and 23 g versus 32 g fat) but the roasted chicken option has more lots of sodium (1,430 mg versus 1,380). The L.A. The Times also notes that Double Downs has fewer calories than the TenderCrisp Burger King chicken sandwich, which has 800 calories.

Sales

From its launch on April 12, 2010 across the country until early July, a KFC spokeswoman reported that the chain had sold 10 million units for a total of approximately $ 50 million in revenue. An analyst said that the figure accounted for 5% of KFC sales in that time period, an unimportant number for KFC finances.

In Canada, Double Down became KFC's newest selling product, selling over 350,000 units in less than 10 days. Despite the sale of more than one million units, KFC Canada halted Double Down in 2010, reviving for a short period in 2011. In August 2015, KFC Canada brought back Double Down for a short period of time. Sales in New Zealand reached 600,000 units during its five-week promotion. Grant Ellis, CFO of New Zealand's KFC operator, Restaurant Brands, said that despite this sale, Double Down "has removed some of the better margin products."

After the launch of Zinger Double Down in Korea, overall sales for KFC Korea increased by 20%.
