Nags Head is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. This is a busy vacation spot because of the beaches and dunes at Jockey's Ridge. The population is 2,757 at the 2010 census.

History
The initial map of the area shows the Nags Head as a cape of land marked by the high dunes visible from miles in the ocean. The origins of the city's name are unclear, but the possibility is named after one of the Nag Chiefs on the English coast.
The folkloric explanation claims that donkeys or horses (nags) will have lights that hang on their heads by malicious destroyers to trick the ship to run aground and then loot their valuable ships. The city symbol represents one of the hooves of the story.
Around 1830, the Nags Head was known as a resort area, and so it remains today. Jockey's Ridge is the last remaining of the dunes seen by the first explorers, as the area is now highly developed. The city was founded in 1961.

Attractions
Located in Nags Head is the largest sand dune on the East Coast, Jockey's Ridge. The dunes have migrated for years from coastal wind energy and have buried mini golf courses along the way. The park's visitor center includes an informative museum with exhibits in the sand, weather, and local fauna. The Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve is 1,092 hectares (4.42 km 2 ) and is located on North Jockey's Ridge and east of Roanoke Sound. It was designated as National Natural Landmark in 1974.
As in other coastal cities, the seas and beaches are the main attractions, providing beaches for swimming, sunbathing, and various water sports. A series of historic cottages overlooking the beach in several parts. There are three popular docks for fishing: Nags Head Pier, Jennette's Pier (destroyed by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, purchased and renovated by North Carolina Aquariums, reopened in May 2011), and Outer Banks Pier. The city also has a mini golf course and a small entertainment center with go-karts and car bumpers for family entertainment.
