History

On March 24, 2011, Las Vegas Sands announced it had terminated its hotel management agreement with Shangri-La International Hotel Management for the construction of a new casino resort under construction in plots 5 and 6 in Cotai. Las Vegas Sands is allegedly in talks with InterContinental Hotels Group PLC to manage two hotel towers on a $ 4.1 billion expansion project.

Sands China also decided to manage the hotel tower on site 5 that should be operated by Shangri-La. Sands China signed a franchise agreement with Hilton Worldwide and InterContinental Hotels for brands of over 1,800 rooms on Cotai sites 5 and 6. The resort will officially be named Sands Cotai Central, the company announced on August 5, 2011. The site will include over 300,000 (28,000 m 2 ) meeting room, 11 food and beverage companies and 106,000 square feet (9,800m 2 ) game area but also 13.700.000 square -foot (1,270,000 m 2 ) non-gaming facility.

Construction

Architectural company Aedas is the principal architect for all Las Vegas Sands projects on the Cotai Strip and is responsible for hiring all local consultants and for developing, coordinating and implementing designs.

The construction of the project is slowed and complicated by at least partly by government restrictions on the number of foreign worker companies in labor-intensive areas. According to the main contractor: "The work began in 2006 but the project went through a period of suspension due to the global economic crisis During this period, the work on the project stopped completely and therefore quite difficult to restart the project Staff must be recruited and contracted contractors More than 130 contractors involved in the project The limitation of import labor quotas is also challenging. "

The number of gambling tables in the resort is a complicated issue as well because local authorities impose restrictions on tables until 2013. The company said in early August 2011 that Sands Cotai Central will have up to 530 tables versus 670 planned previously..

Opening (2012-2015)

Opened on 11 April 2012. The opening ceremony was announced as "Asia's Largest Launch Event in 2012". It was marked by high wire walkers Jade Kindar-Martin and his wife Karine Mauffrey, a tempempting duo to cross a distance of 525 meters (1,700 feet) between the top of the Venetian and the new Conrad Hotel, while balancing 150 meters (500 feet) above the ground on a wire less than an inch thick. The spectacle was accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra of China.

The second phase opens on September 20, 2012. The third phase (St Regis Macao) opens on December 17, 2015.

In 2017, Las Vegas Sands announced plans to renovate Sands Cotai Central under the London theme and turn it into The Londoner Macao , due to disappointing results on the property. Conversion is expected to be completed by 2020.
