History

Sandton City was built as a shopping center for twenty-one concrete blocks, which opened in late 1973. This is a typical example of Brutalist architecture in South Africa in the early 1970s, often referred to as "Apartheid Architecture" because of its savings and scale, and because the government Apartheid used this style in most administrative and state buildings at that time. Architecture is also seen in Golden Acre (Goue Akker), a similar shopping center built in Cape Town before the construction of Sandton City, International Terminal at Johannesburg airport, Carlton Center, Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg), and JG Strijdom (since renamed Hillbrow Tower) in Hillbrow, Central Johannesburg. Most of these buildings were conceived in the late 1960s.

1970s

Sandton City opened in 1973 with 120 stores on two levels, and added two additional levels of parking for 2,500 cars and outdoor parking. It was also the first in Johannesburg. Once opened, the scale and depth of the center revolutionized South African and Johannesburg retail. The outdoor plaza to offices is located on the east, the branches of Nedbank and Barclays (later became First National Bank), medical suites, and steak houses. A bridge connects the outer plaza with what later became the Sandton Library, a medical clinic, and the Sandton Board building. In the early 1970s, a small lower floor is housed in a post office, and the Ster-Kinekor cinema complex that still exists today.

1980s

According to the Sandton City website, there are 240 stores and 8000 parking spaces while five star towers are launched, and 44,000 square meters of space are added. Sandton Sun Hotel was built in 1984 as part of the complex.

1990s

During this time, Sandton City underwent major renovations in public areas. The area in front of the Sandton Library was developed into a new shopping center, Sandton Square, connected by a sky bridge. A pyramid-shaped roof was added in the 1990s and provided a distinguishing feature of architecture from Sandton City.

2000s

In 2001, the store was upgraded to 295 while the parking space was upgraded to 10,000. A new food court and a giant video wall were also built. The retail level of Home Living was developed in 2002, and the cinema complex received improvements in the same year.

2010s

By 2013, the twin tower office in Sandton City is completely re-wrapped with a contemporary glass shell (now called the Atrium on the 5th). In 2014, the office tower receives a complete external overhaul, with new cladding applied on top of the original concrete structure. The new wing is also added to the mall, joining Edgars and Woolworths Courts. The major renovations of the adjoining entertainment and storefront areas begin in 2017 and will be completed by 2018.
