Histori

The roots of Alhambra begin with the Mission of San Gabriel, founded on September 8, 1771, and the natives, Tongva, who inhabited the area before the arrival of the Spaniards. The land that would later become the Alhambra is part of a 300,000 acre land grant awarded to Manuel Nieto by Spain. In 1820 Mexico won its independence from the Spanish crown and the land that once ruled by them became part of the Mexican Republic. These lands were then transferred into the hands of the United States after the defeat in the Mexican-American War. A wealthy developer, Benjamin Davis Wilson, married Ramona Yorba, the daughter of Bernardo Yorba, who owns the land that would become the Alhambra. With the persuasion of his daughter, Ruth, Yorba named the land after a book he was reading, Washington Irving Tales of the Alhambra, which he was inspired to write with his extended visit to the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain. The Alhambra was established as a suburb of Los Angeles that remained an unrelated area during the mid-19th century. The first school in Alhambra is the Ramona High School, built on a hillside property donated by the famed family of James de Barth Shorb. Thirteen years before the city was founded, several prominent families in San Gabriel Valley who were interested in Catholic education for their daughter founded the school in 1890. The city's first high school, Alhambra High School, was founded in 1898, five years before the merger city. On July 11, 1903, the city of Alhambra was founded. The Alhambra Fire Department was founded in 1906.

The Alhambra was originally promoted as a "home town", and many of its homes have historical significance. They include styles such as craftsmen, bungalows, Spanish Mediterranean, Spanish colonial, Italian beaux art, and arts and crafts. Twenty-six single-family residences have been designated historic environments by the city, including Bean Tract (formerly owned by the early inhabitants Jacob Bean), Midwick Tract (site of the Midwick Country Club), Airport Tract (formerly the landing strip for Alhambra Airport), and Emery Park area. There are also a large number of condos, rental apartments, and mixed residential/commercial buildings, especially in downtown areas.

The main business district of Alhambra, at the intersection of Main and Garfield, has been a trading hub since 1895. In the 1950s, it has become an upscale sight and is a "place" to go to the San Gabriel Valley. While many classical historic buildings have been torn down for years, the redevelopment of Main Street has led to many places to eat, retail, and entertainment. The Alhambra has experienced a wave of new immigrants, beginning with the Italians in the 1950s, the Mexicans of the 1960s, and the Chinese in the 1980s. As a result, China's highly active business area has grown in the Boulevard Valley, including Chinese supermarkets, restaurants, shops, banks, realtors, and medical offices. The Boulevard Valley corridor has become a national hub for many of Asia's bank headquarters, and there are other nationally recognized retailers in the city.

The historic Garfield Theater, located in Boulevard Valley and Garfield Avenue from 1925 to 2001, was once a vaudeville venue and is rumored to have hosted the Gumm Sisters, featuring a very young Judy Garland. It faded from its original glory, for the last few years bought and screened Chinese films, and in 2001 went out of business. Furthermore, the developers have renovated the dilapidated building, turning it into a bustling commercial center with many Chinese shops and restaurants.

In 2003, actress Lana Clarkson was shot dead at Alhambra's home, record producer Phil Spector. Spector lives in the largest and most famous residence of the Alhambra, Pyrenees Castle, built in 1926. In 2009, Spector was convicted of second-degree murder in connection with Clarkson's death.
