Boston Sand and Gravel are ready-mix concrete suppliers, concrete blocks, sand and crushed stone, with operations and subsidiaries in eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire in the United States.
The Charlestown, Massachusetts, plant is a very visible landmark for commuters on the north side of Boston, as it is located between Central Artery North (part of Interstate 93) and the MBTA Commuter railroad north of the North Station. The tower is directly adjacent to the new Leverett Connector, and the ramp that connects the Zakim Bridge with the Tobin Bridge completely surrounds the factory, which supplies the concrete for the Big Dig project that builds it.
The company was founded in 1914, and originally located where the CambridgeSide Galleria is now. It was convenient to the Charles River because the materials were originally sourced from dredging. Later, the company began acquiring raw materials from mining in Ossipee, New Hampshire, and Hooksett, New Hampshire.
Boston Sand and Gravel has a railroad from Ossipee to Rollinsford, New Hampshire, through a railroad subsidiary, New Hampshire Northcoast Corporation. The location of the plant along the government-owned track in Charlestown provides easy access for its pebbled trains, through an agreement to use the right tracks held by Pan Am Railways. It also has terminals in Everett, Massachusetts, for delivery of aggregate materials by ships, trains, and trucks.
In 2016, other subsidiaries are Manchester Sand and Gravel, Ossipee Aggregates, Rosenfeld Concrete, Southeastern Concrete, and Lawrence Ready Mix.
