The surface track of the horse racing track refers to the material on which the track is created. There are three types of trajectory surfaces used in modern horse racing. This is:
- Turf , the most common lane surface in Europe
- Dirt , the most common track surface in the US
- Artificial or Synthetic , the collective term for a number of man-made surfaces used in a number of locations around the world.
Racing styles vary between surfaces, with race droppings tend to have the fastest speed, while grass racing often descends into sprints in stretching. Racing on an artificial surface tends to play somewhere in between. Anecdotally, American bettors consider land racing more predictable, which makes it a more popular medium for betting purposes. Weather conditions affect different surface speeds as well, and a rating system has been developed to show track conditions (known as "go" in the UK and Ireland). The surface of the grass is the most affected by the weather changes, and a lot of grass lawns will have a strong preference for certain types of go.

Synthetic surfaces allow the race to take place in bad weather conditions, when it may be canceled, and for this reason it is sometimes referred to as the All Weather surface. Manufacturers of synthetic racetrack surface materials promote the fact that synthetic tracks have better drainage attributes than natural surfaces.
There is also evidence that synthetic surfaces are significantly safer than dirt in terms of equine damage, although there are many variables that come into play. Statistics for North America in 2015 show 1.18 deaths per 1,000 starting on synthetic surfaces, 1.22 on grass, and 1.78 on dirt tracks. The level of damage decreases for each surface compared to 2014.
The first synthetic surface used for pure race racing is the Tropical Garden Tartan grass, a synthetic surface similar to that of Astroturf installed in 1966. Tartan land has never been successful with horsemen.
The first synthetic surface to replace dirt in the United States was installed at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington, Pennsylvania in 1963. This surface, called Tartan, was found unsatisfactory and removed and replaced by traditional limestone surfaces in 1975.
