Sunset Beach is a seaside town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,572 at the 2010 census, up from 1,824 in the 2000 census. This is part of the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area.

Histori

The beach town of Sunset Beach began in 1955 when the occupied land was purchased by the property developer. Construction began in earnest with the completion of a bridge connecting the coastal island to the mainland in 1958. Sunset Beach was established as a city in 1963.

Geography

Sunset Beach is located southwest of Brunswick County on 33Ãƒ, Ã‚ Â° 53? 7? N 78 Ã‚ Â° 30? 27? W (33.885348, -78.507528). This is the last Atlantic coast developed before the South Carolina border. One third of the city's territory occupies a barrier island between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway; the rest of the city extends to the mainland in the north. The undeveloped Bird Island is directly to the west, Calabash is the closest town to the west on the mainland, and Ocean Isle Beach is to the east.

According to the US Census Bureau, the city of Sunset Beach has a total area of â€‹â€‹7.3 square miles (19.0 km ²). 6.4 square miles (16.7 km ²) of it is ground, and 0.89 square miles (2.3 km ²) of it (12.22 %) is water.

Demographics

In the 2000 census, there were 1,824 people, 909 households, and 678 families living in the city. Population density is 360.9 people per square mile (139.5/kmÂ²). There are 2,983 housing units with an average density of 590.3 per square mile (228.1/kmÂ²). City's racial makeup is 97.37% White, 0.49% African American, 0.38% Native Americans, 0.38% Asian, 0.27% of other races, and 1.10% of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin of any race is 1.37% of the population.

There are 909 households where 7.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.0% are married couples living together, 3.3% have unmarried female households present, and 25.4 % is not family. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size was 2.01 and the average family size was 2.28.

In the city, the population is spread by 6.9% under the age of 18, 2.7% from 18 to 24, 12.1% from 25 to 44, 43.6% from 45 to 64, and 34.7% years or more. The average age is 60 years. For every 100 women, there are 97.2 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 95.2 men.

The average income for households in the city is $ 47,356, and the average income for families is $ 57,019. Men have an average income of $ 40,795 compared to $ 27,708 for women. The per capita income for the city is $ 36,181. About 3.0% of families and 4.2% of the population are below the poverty line, including 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those aged 65 and older.

Sun Bridge Beach

Since most of Sunset Beach and the adjacent sanctuary of the Isle of Bird Island have a barrier island, the only way to get there from the mainland is to cross the pontoon bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent swampland. It is a wooden structure that can hold only one lane of traffic at any given time, and is the only one that is still used along the East Coast until 2010. During the day in the summer, traffic will stop hourly, in time, and the bridge will be open for vessel traffic in the water for 10 minutes. At 10 minutes after hours, every hour, the bridge will reopen for more vehicle traffic for 50 minutes. During the quiet season, the bridge is only opened upon request of ship traffic. Although this causes headaches for those trying to enter or exit the island, many locals say the bridge, however, provides a more relaxed city atmosphere. Historically, this is in stark contrast to the rapid growth that affects other coastal communities along the Grand Strand.

In February 2008, NCDOT began construction to replace the old bridge with a 65-foot (non-balanced), non-arc modern bridge. The bridge was opened 11 November 2010. The old Sunset Beach pontoon swing bridge is rescued by the Old Bridge Preservation Society which plans to create a museum that celebrates the old bridge and the city's history. The new bridge eliminates the need for guard bridges and provides a continuous stream of vehicle traffic inside and outside the island, and water traffic on the Intracoastal Waterway.

Housing on Sunset Beach

The city comprises both the land and island islands barrier of about 1,200 homes. Three of the city's mainland environments are the development of golf courses at Oyster Bay, Sea Trail Resort and Sandpiper Bay. Ocean Ridge Plantation, though not in the city limits, has one of the "sister communities" at Sunset Beach's ETJ. Ocean Ridge has an island center/clubhouse facility, while Sea Trail Home Owners Association has a dedicated parking area for members. The island is mainly home to holiday rental homes and cottages, although there are nearly 100 full-time residents as well.
