Italian Sandwich , sometimes referred to as the Maine Italian sandwich , is an American submarine sandwich in Italian-American cuisine prepared on rolls or long bread with meat, cheese and various vegetables. The materials serve to balance each other, creating a balance of taste and texture. Italian sandwiches were found in Portland, Maine, in 1903 by Giovanni Amato, a baker. This is known as submarine sandwiches in Boston, Massachusetts, and as spuckie in East Boston.

Italian sandwiches are prepared using long rolls or bread with meat such as salami, mortadella, capicolla and ham along with American provolone or cheese, tomatoes, onions, sour pickles, green peppers, black olives, olive oil or salad oil, salt and black pepper. Additives, such as pepperoni, banana pepper, lettuce and mustard, can be added, and sandwiches are often cut in half to make them easier to handle. The sandwich flavors and textures are united by ingredients used to create a gastronomic balance, with fat and acids in ingredients that serve to compensate for each other.

History
Italian sandwiches were found in Portland, Maine, by baker Giovanni Amato in 1903. When selling bread in his cart, Amato received a request from a harbor worker to cut his long bread and added slices of meat, cheese, and vegetables to them. Amato then opened a sandwich shop called Amato's, and today sandwiches are kept prepared by Amato's sandwich shop in Portland. The Amato version is traditionally prepared using freshly baked bread, ham, American cheese, tomato slices, green pepper and pickled acids, black olives and salad oil.
Italian sandwiches known as submarine sandwiches in Boston, Massachusetts and in east Boston are referred to as spuckie, which may be called spuccadella, rolls Italy with a pointy shape. In Philadelphia and South Jersey it is known as "hoagie" or "grinder". This is the first name that gives the title to "Subway Sandwich Shops" around the world.
