History
The White House Shop was founded in 1946 at Arctic Ave in Atlantic City by Anthony "Tony" Basile along with Aunt Basilia and Uncle Alfred "Fritz", Sacco. Before that date, the front of the building on Artic Ave. is Mr. tailor's shop. Basile. While a rare business during World War II, his wife would sell a sandwich (on the bread she bought from the Formica bakery across the street) that she made in her kitchen out the back side door. After the war, he decided to close his tailor shop and open the front of the building as a cold "submarine" sandwich shop. The fountain and grill hood found today in front comes from the original store. The family still lives behind the store at that time. Then, the back was renovated as it appears today to add grills, boards and more storage space. At the back are two ancient pine machines for years. It stays in its original location with an additional expansion at Trump Taj Mahal.
They have been popular with locals and tourists alike, attracting many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Oprah Winfrey, Rocky Marciano, Joe DiMaggio, Donald Trump, and others. After The Beatles played a concert in Atlantic City in 1964, they stopped at the White House Sub Shop for a 72-inch hoagie.
The White House Sub Shop is known for its cold and hot sandwiches that are about two feet long. Notable sandwiches include Italian sub, their own creations, Special White House , and cheesesteaks.
