Whitesands Bay (Welsh: Porth Mawr ), shown as Whitesand Bay on some maps, is an EEC award winner, Blue Flag standard, spacious sandy beach is located on the St. David peninsula in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, England. The beach is located about two miles west of the small town of St. Louis. Davids and is about a mile south of St. Davids Head and has been described as the best surf beach in Pembrokeshire and one of the best tourist beaches in the world.
The area to the north east of the bay is dominated by a large rocky outcrop, 594 feet (181 m) at the highest point, known as Carn Llidi - which could mean "Cairn of the Gates" or "Cairn of Wrath". The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes along the bay, giving access north to the secluded bays of Porthlleuog and Porthmelgan (accessible only on foot), and the bumpy coastal views of St Davids Head. To the south, the coastal route leads to Porthselau and St. Justinian's, with views to Ramsey Sound to Ramsey Island. There are a number of megalithic burial chambers, stone cottage circles and the British Iron Age field system and cages to be seen around Carn Llidi and St Davids Head.
It is said that St. Patrick had his vision of turning Ireland into Christianity here and sailing from the bay in the fifth century. The site of the Celtic chapel, dedicated to St. Patrick's, is situated under a mound by car park just east of the bay, on what is considered an embarkation point for pilgrims to St. Anthony's Cathedral. Davids. Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, is said to have been educated at Ty Gwyn (a white farmhouse overlooking the coast) by St. Paulinus. It is believed that St. Non, David's mother, also lived here when it was a monastery.
At very low tide and after heavy storms, the remains of the submerged ancient forests can be seen on the shore, consisting of birch stumps, pine trees, hazel trees and oaks. The remains of animals have been found in these deposits including parts of aurochs, red deer horns and brown bear jaws.
