Histori
Sydney City2Surf has been held as an annual event since the first run on September 5, 1971, originally as a 9.4 mile (15.1 km) run which starts at George Street, adjacent to Sydney Town Hall. It was conceived by The Sun staff and was inspired by the Bay to Breakers event in San Francisco. The first event was jointly hosted by the Amateur Athletic Association of NSW and NSW Women's Amateur Athletic Association and attracted 1,576 beginners, 1,509 of whom completed the event within 100 minutes. Many of the participants listed as athletes who are members of the Registered Athlete Club are part of these two bodies. To date, 33 of these migrants, now known as City2Surf Legends, have run in every City2Surf.
Since 1973 it has been held on the second Sunday of August, except for the race held in 2000, moving to July due to the Sydney Olympics in August.
When The Sun stopped in 1988, the sponsorship of the event was confirmed to the new week's tabloid The Sun-Herald .
In 2010, on the 40th anniversary of the event, a record of 80,000 participants ran, making it the biggest show in the world. The level of participation continues. The race is still primarily sponsored and hosted by The Sun-Herald .
The record of the course is 40:03, set by Steve Moneghetti in 1991. The women's record is 45:08 minutes, set by Susie Power in 2001. Non-Australian athletes usually win the race from 1995 to 2007, including the recurring winner Laban Chege ( 1999-2000), Patrick Nyangelo Lusato (2003-2005), and Dickson Marwa (2006-2007). In 2008, Martin Dent became the first Australian winner since Lee Troop in 1997. Marwa competes in the 2008 Olympics.
Since 2010, courses have begun in some groups to give preference to faster runners. The first group to be started is an elite wheelchair athlete, followed by a select group selected and chosen by the participants, followed by runners with previous race time under 70 minutes, runners with previous race time under 90 minutes, incoming group open , joggers open entries, and finally the open "Back of the Pack" group to walk, use a wheelchair or push a child carriage. Entry to all groups is limited to a limited number of competitors and, except for invitees only, is allocated based on who first comes first served.

Important event
Death during the race has occurred several times. In 2000, 2008, and 2014, a competitor died of a heart attack near the finish line of the race. After the death of 2008, medical academics Michael O'Rourke noted that a runner who develops arrhythmias and cardiac arrest occurs almost every year but the sufferer is usually revived.
